1. AMSAAC Officially Launched

--------------------------------------------

We are proud to announce that the Asian Medical Students' Association Alumni Club (abbreviated as AMSAAC and pronounced "am-sack") has been officially launched! The Launching Ceremony was held at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia on July 8, 2013, during the 34th AMSC 2013 in Malaysia. We have defined our objectives as follows:

- To uphold the AMSA philosophy of “Knowledge, Action, Friendship”.

- To facilitate and support meetings among AMSAAC members.

- To promote, foster and maintain links between AMSAAC and AMSA, both at the individual, chapter and international level.

- To encourage AMSAAC members to take an active interest in AMSA conferences and projects.

- To promote the interests of AMSA and to aid its development.

We are currently working on finalizing the constitution and discussing topics such as membership, funding and the events and projects we will carry out.

2. Introducing the AMSAAC Officers

--------------------------------------------

There are four officers who will be running AMSAAC together with the Regional Contact Persons (or RCPs) from each chapter.

Aprilianto Eddy Wiria aka Eddy (Indonesia)   Secretary General

Waka Shibata aka Waka (Japan)   Communications Officer

Takaaki Sato aka Taka (Japan/UK)   Membership Officer

Michael Pineda aka Mike (Philippines)   Finance Officer

Through this newsletter we would like you to get to know each of these officers... Not just what we did for AMSA, what we are currently doing for AMSAAC, and what medical specialty we specialize in, but what motivates us, what we are passionate about and what our hobbies are. We will start with our Secretary General, Eddy!

Eddy was Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the 24th AMSC 2003 in Indonesia and the Overall Chairperson of AMSA International in 2003/2004. He has been working at the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia since 2005. He just finished his PhD at the Department of Parasitology, Leiden University Medical Center, Netherlands on "The impact of helminth infections on coinfection and on health outcomes in rural Indonesia". He combined immunology and epidemiology to measure several health parameters in a population before and after deworming (giving anthelminthic treatment). Visit Eddy's ResearchGate profile for the details. He enjoys research, teaching and traveling, cooking and eating!

A message from Eddy:

Dear fellow AMSA Alumni,

We might have different memory in AMSA. Personally, it takes me back to about 15 years ago in 1998, where a friend (accidently) asked me to join him applying for AMSA delegates to 20th AMSC in Bangkok 1999. That time was a fantastic twist of fate. I was straightaway found out that we were such a warm and an active group of medical students from various universities and various regions which then through AMSC meet and greet, share knowledge, culture and be friends. It was then encouraged for every AMSA units to have more activities outside AMSC in every region, in every university exclusively for members or inclusively for everyone.

While AMSA keeps evolving to be a better organization which is supported with more and more committed members and various activities, the graduated AMSA members or alumni are spread all over the world to build up their carrier while (may be) subconsciously (individually or together) keep living-up AMSA spirit as a part of the world citizen that passionately are trying to assemble better world for all; Everyone with their own talents and ways. Now the path has brought us back to again re-connect.

While lots of ideas and discussions come and go on how to run our club, we just do it. The core is this AMSA-Alumni Club exists as we still want to be in touch, and this newsletter, as part of others, is one way to facilitate it. We are so grown up but we also are so young, and we are ready to grow together. Here is the first news between us, and we hope to collect and to spread news of us from every part of this round earth and (maybe later) beyond.

Warm welcome, Eddy

3. First Reunion Dinner

--------------------------------------------

During the 34th AMSC 2013 in Malaysia, the First Reunion Dinner was hosted to overwhelming success! Over 50 alumni and a few current members from Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Kingdom gathered on July 6, 2013 at the Royale Chulan Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. There was lots of fun (games and dancing!) and photos, just like an AMSA conference! Special thanks to Adli Ali, AMSA Malaysia alumnae, and Cecil Lee, the first Liaison Officer for AMSAAC of AMSA International, also from Malaysia, for doing an excellent job organizing this special event.

4. Visit our Website

--------------------------------------------

We have set up a website for AMSAAC. The contents include basic information about our organization, reports on events (with lots of great photos), updates about upcoming events and some AMSA history with old conference photos which are sure to make you feel nostalgic. Most of the beautiful pictures on the website were taken by Rico Natalio, AMSA Indonesia alumnae. Click here to visit our website!

5. Editor's Notes

--------------------------------------------

Hi everyone, my name is Waka Shibata and I am the Communications Officer of AMSAAC. I was involved in AMSA from 2003 (already 10 years ago!) to 2008. Some of you may remember me as the Overall Chairperson of AMSA International in 2006/2007 or as the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the 29th AMSC 2008 in Tokyo. I am currently busy training as an anesthesiologist and in my spare time coach a girls’ soccer team and compete in triathlons. As AMSAAC Communications Officer, my main undertakings this year will be the website and these newsletters and making sure that all kinds of AMSAAC documents are properly managed. I am planning on a four newsletters this year, so look forward to the next edition in December!
